Holiday Customs


One of the most important celebration in Philippines is Christmas because one of two predominantly Catholic countries in Asia.

The country celebrates the world's longest Christmas season, with Christmas carols heard as early as September and lasting variously until either Epiphany, the Feast of the Black Nazarene on January 9, or the Feast of the Santo Niño on the third Sunday of January.

Languages


Filipino and English are the official languages, with the regional languages recognized as auxiliary officers in their respective regions.

Religious Beliefs

More than 90 % of the population is Christian: 80 % belong to the Catholic Church, while 10 % belong to other Christian denominations.


Etiquette

Filipinos are very strict about public displays of affection. Some of these are:

  • Men should not be physically demonstrative with other men, let alone women. Distance is vital for understanding.
  • Speaking in a loud voice or laughing too much in public can be frowned upon by Filipinos.
  •  It is unacceptable to point fingers at other people.
